Why Move to Amersfoort?

Amersfoort is one of the most picturesque and well-located cities in the Netherlands. Situated exactly in the geographical center of the country, it serves as a vital junction for the national railway and highway networks. Its medieval city center, featuring the iconic Koppelpoort, is remarkably well-preserved.

The city is consistently ranked as one of the best places for families to live in the Netherlands. It offers a high density of green spaces, top-tier schools, and a safe, community-focused environment. For professionals, Amersfoort hosts a growing number of businesses in the insurance, engineering, and IT sectors.

Living in Amersfoort means enjoying a high quality of life with a slightly lower price tag than Amsterdam or Utrecht. You get the benefits of a large city (culture, shopping, dining) combined with the intimacy of a smaller town. Its central location makes it a favorite for 'split-households' where partners work in different cities.

Registration & BSN

Registering in Amersfoort is done at the Stadhuis (City Hall) located at Stadhuisplein. You must make an appointment to register within 5 days of your move. This registration is the only way to get your BSN.

Step-by-Step

  1. 1 Book an appointment via amersfoort.nl.
  2. 2 Bring your passport and a copy.
  3. 3 Bring your rental contract or a declaration of consent from the main occupant.
  4. 4 Bring your birth certificate (and marriage certificate if applicable) with necessary legalizations.
  5. 5 The BSN will be issued during or shortly after your appointment.

Amersfoort City Hall is very efficient, but appointments for first-time registrations can sometimes have a waiting time of a week. Book as soon as you have a confirmed address.

Getting Around

Transport is Amersfoort's greatest strength. It is the second-largest railway junction in the Netherlands after Utrecht.

Intercity trains to Amsterdam Centraal take 35 minutes, and to Utrecht Centraal just 15 minutes.
Amersfoort Centraal station connects directly to almost every major city in the country.
The city is surrounded by the A1 and A28 highways, providing easy car access in all directions.
The local bus network is reliable, with 'U-OV' and 'Syntus' serving the region.
Cycling is exceptionally easy, with dedicated paths connecting all outer districts to the center.

Because of its central location, many residents choose Amersfoort specifically to minimize commute times when working in different parts of the Randstad or beyond.

Expat Community & Schools

Amersfoort has a growing international community, though it feels more 'typically Dutch' than Amsterdam or Amstelveen. There are several active expat groups and international meetups.

For families, education is a major draw:

  • International School Utrecht (ISU): Only 15 minutes away by train, serving many Amersfoort-based families.
  • International Primary School (IPS) Hilversum: Also easily accessible by train or car.
  • Dutch public schools: Amersfoort has many excellent primary and secondary schools that are very welcoming to international students.

The city offers an incredible array of leisure activities for children, including the zoo, many indoor play centers, and the vast forests of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug just to the south.

Healthcare

The Meander Medisch Centrum is a world-class hospital located on the edge of the city. It is known for its modern architecture and high standard of patient care.

There are numerous GP practices (huisartsen) throughout the city. Most are currently accepting new patients, but it is wise to register as soon as you move.

In case of non-emergency medical needs during evenings or weekends, call the 'Huisartsenpost Eemland', which is located at the Meander hospital site.
